susannah sheppard is a freelance photographer living in texas. she has been working in the commercial photography world for the past 12 years in new York and boston, and returned to her home state last year. she first started shooting through a journalism course while earning her bachelors at UT, and when she moved to san Miguel de allende after graduation, she pursued photography through the institute allende, enrolling in their MFA program. after a year of life as an ex-pat, she transferred to parson's school of Design in new York, but left to work on a film project with Cindy Sherman. a life of pre-dawn crew calls soon followed, and the years flew by assisting, casting, location scouting, printing, and producing in the editorial and advertising worlds.
And then she started shooting.
and all the while she went exploring every so often around the globe to see what other places were like. a diversion took her to an idyllic new England rural life in concord, ma, where she worked commercially as well as created art. but new york summoned her back to her hip little 'hood in Brooklyn, which slowly became so hip that all the artists moved away, and rich bankers wanted her loft, and her assortment of odd animals needed a yard, and she missed her family.
So she went home.
she settled in Austin where some of her neighbors seemed of kindred spirits, and she bought a car that runs on biodiesel, and planted a garden, and knits and recycles and composts regularly. when she is not shooting, you can find her rock climbing and paddling and hiking and swimming or lying in her hammock. And if she is not there, a good place to look is always Mexico.
